HARRISBURG, PA—Robert W. Waeger, retired director of Pennsylvania’s Medical Professional Liability Catastrophic Loss Fund (MCARE), has become of counsel to the Harrisburg law firm SkarlatosZonarich LLC.

“Mr. Waeger’s experience and knowledge are virtually unparalleled,” said firm managing attorney John R. Zonarich. “In his 21 years with the state-administered medical malpractice fund, Robert supervised up to 20 staff attorneys and claims managers, 40 outside law firms and managed or oversaw some $4 billion in medical malpractice claims. He understands the issues, the complexities, and is widely known and respected.”

Before his career with MCARE, Waeger served as vice president for claims with the PHICO Insurance Co. He has also represented clients as a member of several private practices, including SkarlatosZonarich in the early 1980s. He has over 35 years of experience in defense litigation both as insurance trial counsel and senior executive claims manager of complex medical malpractice litigation. Waeger also holds an accounting degree from St. Francis University.

He has served as an adjunct professor of insurance law at Millersville University, as a member of the board of the St. Francis University Alumni Association, and as a speaker for the Pennsylvania Association for Justice (Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers), the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, and the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania.

Waeger was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and is an active pilot and member of the Lawyer/Pilot Bar Association. He lives in Camp Hill.
